Christmas shopping for the anti-consumer, Part 5: Infant and kids clothing
Categories:
This week I've been writing about kid's products handmade in the USA (and Canada) by artists, independent
designers, small companies and individual craftfolks. This morning I highlighted a dozen or so websites by people who
are designing and silkscreening unique t-shirts and
onesies, and now I'll follow up on a few folks who are making other kinds of kids clothing by hand.
Baby clothing is cute by nature of its size alone, so companies like the Gap and Carter's get away with selling uninspired, poorly-designed and poorly-manufactured clothing with boring fabrics for way more than they should be able to get away with. Fortunately, there are also quite a few small-time designers out there who make unique and beautiful kids clothes with exciting ideas and even more exciting fabrics. Here is just a small sampling:
-
Delilah Crown (San Francisco: one of our
favorites; her skirts and dresses have me dying for my girl to be a 2T); -
Tartlette (San Francisco: AWESOME stuff);
-
One Little Monkey (Ohio);
-
Innies ‘N Outties (Sherman Oaks, California: great fabrics, and everything they sell can be worn inside or out);
-
knittle (check out that little red riding hood coat!);
-
Ragamufyn (Florida);
-
Bossa Nova Baby (Portland, Oregon);
-
Baby Bug Studio (Wauwatosa, Wisconsin-some more great stuff!).
-
TextileFetish (Austin, Texas)
If you know of anyone else who makes great kids clothes and sells them on the internet, please leave a name and a link in the comments and I’d be glad to add them.

With the weather getting so cold, my little one keeps warm in her favorite cashmere baby sweater from www.bbzbaby.com. We got the sweater from a friend of the designer (Mandy Mok, formerly of Calvin Klein) when little Blythe was just a month old and she still wears it all the time. Its great for nighttime since its pure 100% cashmere so it keeps her warm and snuggly. Also, all bbzbaby items can be either machine or hand washed so no special care is needed and busy moms like me can pretty much just "wash and go".

I really do agree with you, but I can't spend $40 on a dress for my kid. How about more affordable options?
